Beetroot Burger – A healthy evening snack

Beetroot Burger is a sort of sandwich with a circular patty made of cooked beetroot, onions & peas would be placed in between the sliced burger buns and then topped with cheese and veggies. Burger is definitely a food that many of us (Especially kids) love to snack on. As we take potatoes in our diet in many ways as fries & chips, I replaced the potato patty in burger with a beetroot patty to make it both tasty and healthy.

Beetroot Burger from HomemakingDelight

I was doubtful that the beetroot might spoil the burger taste, but to my surprise it tasted more delicious than the usual one with potato. Also, beetroot boosts stamina, lowers blood pressure and are rich in valuable nutrients and fiber. Try the below recipe and have your healthy beetroot burgers without any guilt of increasing your waistline.

Makes 4 Burgers


Shredded Beetroot – 2 cups (heaped)

Onion – 1 cup

Peas – 1/2 cup

Ginger – 1/2 tsp

Salt – 3/4 tsp or as required

Jeera – 1 tsp

Green chilies – 2 (optional)

Sambar or Chili Powder – 2 tblsp

Garam Masala – 1/2 tsp

Cilantro – 3 tblsp finely chopped

Bread crumbs – 1/2 cup (Toast the bread in oven for 300F for 10-15 mins until it turns golden brown & crush it in the blender or mixer grinder to get the crumbs)

Oil for shallow frying

Sesame bun – set of 4


Cheese slice – 4

Lettuce few

Caramelized Onion – 2  (Saute the onions in oil or butter, once it becomes translucent add sugar & fry until it turns brown)

Tomato – 1 (sliced)

Frozen Onion rings or French fries for topping (Substitute with your favorite/available toppings)

Preparation Method:

  1. Heat oil in a pan. Once it’s hot, add jeera, ginger & green chilies followed by chopped onion and saute until the onion turns translucent. Then, add Sambar or chili powder & let it fry for a minute or so.IMG_24212. Add shredded beetroot & peas to the mix and fry it until it’s completely cooked.

IMG_24223. Finally add Salt, garam masala & cilantro, mix well & keep it aside to cool.

IMG_24254. Toast the sesame bun with butter on both sides.

IMG_24325. Divide the beetroot mixture into 4 portions and make flat patties. Dip both the sides of patties in bread crumbs and shallow fry (or grill) it in oil until both sides starts turning brown.IMG_24316. I arranged the burger with the base bun topped it with lettuce, patty, melted cheese, caramelized onions, tomatoes & finally the onion rings.IMG_2441

  1. Yummy beetroot burger is ready to be served with tomato sauce or ranch. 


  1. Place cheese slice (room temperature) on hot burger patties. It will melt & make the burger tastier.

  2. If you don’t prefer shallow frying, just toast the patties in a non-stick pan with a tsp of oil.
