Onion Tomato Gravy
Onion Tomato Gravy or Simple Onion-Tomato Chutney (No Grinding Chutney) is an easy & simple side dish for Idli, dosa & chapathi prepared by cooking onions & tomatoes well with simple, easily available Indian masala items until they reach a thokku-like consistency. Nothing you ‘cook’ could be easier than this to match your Idlies / Dosas / Pooris & Rotis. 🙂
Before you guys proceed to read this Onion Tomato gravy recipe, I must warn you that if you are not a bachelor/novice in cooking, then there is no need to read into this one. Most people who could now cook great food (Or at least palatable ones 🙂 ) would have come across this simpler gravy at least once in their lives. 🙂 We used to call this Vengayam-thakkali thokku or gravy or thakkali-vengaya vadhakkal.
Like many other people, my cooking venture had started with basic recipes like Upma varieties (I had messed up the bread upma too, the first time), this onion-tomato gravy, chutney varieties etc. Onion-Tomato gravy is my favorite of all, as I prepared this dish for the first time, my grandpa (who loved to have it with dosa) told that I cook better than my mom 😉 (I realized later that he told the same to whatever I cook and I was so dumb to have taken that as a compliment 😀 ). So, I recommend this recipe to all those who are new to cooking and those who want to do a simple side-dish to your dosas, idly or Pooris that do not involve any grinding. Others, please visit all our tasty gravy-recipes to match up your Dosas / Chapathis. 🙂

Tomato – 1 cup (finely chopped)
Ginger – 1 inch (finely chopped)
Garlic – 2 pods (finely chopped)
Oil – 3 tblsp ( preferably sesame oil – Gingelly oil – Nallennai)
Jeera (Jeeragam)- 1 tsp
Sambar powder – 1 & 1/2 tsp

Curry leaves – few
Cilantro for Garnishing
- Heat oil (2 tblsp) in a pan. Once it’s hot enough, add the ingredients in the following order jeera, ginger, garlic, onion & curry leaves and saute it, until the onions turn translucent.2. Then, add tomatoes & sambar powder and saute until tomatoes turn mushy. Add water and let it get cooked.3. Switch off the flame once the water is absorbed and the thokku has got thickened.4. Add the reserved (1 tblsp) oil, garnish with cilantro & serve your tasty onion tomato gravy with Dosa, Idli or Chapathi.Tit-Bits:
a) You can skip the water and prepare this dish as thokku by adding juicy tomatoes. Adding more oil in the beginning would enhance the taste.
b) Add bay leaves, clover & cardamom when you prepare this gravy for chapathi.
