Peas Pulao – Easy Matar Pulav – Tasty one pot meal
Peas Pulao aka Mutar Pulav, Pattani Pulavu is an easy rice dish in which rice is flavored with spices and cooked with onions & peas. Peas are sweet and they are rich in starch, fiber & protein. Frozen peas are my favorites as they come in handy on the morning run. Monday mornings (Especially after a long, two-day break) are hard for me to prepare lunch, so I usually prefer any “one pot meal“. Peas Pilaf is the easiest of all as it doesn’t involve cutting veggies and it will be ready in 20 minutes.
To make it easier, you can also prepare peas pulav from the left over rice and it can be accompanied with various sides like Raita, Pickle, Papads, Chips, Fritters or any Gravy of your choice.

Peas Pulao Recipe – Easy Matar Pulav – Tasty one pot meal Recipe
Serves 2
Ingredients:
Briyani Rice (Basmati Rice) – 1 cup heaped
Frozen Peas (pattani)- 1/2 cup (Thawed)
Green chilly – 3 (slit)
Onion – 1/2 cup thinly sliced
Butter or oil – 2 tblsp
Salt – 1 tsp
Water – 2 cups
Mint – 1/8 cup (optional)
Cilantro – 1/8 cup
Spices:
Cinnamon – 1 inch
Bay leaves – 2
Cloves – 3
Cardamom – crushed 1/4 tsp
Jeera/Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Preparation Method:
- Heat oil or butter in a large pan. Once it’s hot, add everything mentioned under “Spices” followed by green chilies, onions & mint & stir for a minute or so.
2. Add water, salt & peas and bring the water to boil.
-
Rinse & soak the briyani rice in water for about 10 mins (Optional, but recommended) and add the rice to the boiling water, mix well and keep it covered.
4. Let it get cooked for about 10-12 minutes. Stir in between for even cooking.
5. Switch off the flame. Add finely chopped coriander leaves and spread the rice.
6. Serve your hot, steaming, aromatic Peas Pulao with Raita, pickle, fritters (Okra Fritters or Bitter gourd fritters) or any gravy of your choice.
Tit-Bits:
- You can add 1/2 cup of cooked potatoes, if you feel that the peas pulao is plain.
-
I prefer cooking pulao in pan. If you are planning to cook in pressure cooker, then adjust water accordingly. Don’t let it go for many whistles for it might make the rice too mushy. Go for 2 or 3 whistles maximum.
-
You can also prepare this dish from the leftover rice.
