What is a mould and why does it occur?

A mould or mold is a variety of fungi that seems to be forming in places where proper sunlight is not available. Mostly it grows indoors and in those places where there is more moisture content. Once it is formed, it spreads very fast and causes troubles. It usually occurs as black or white or gray patches on beds, wooden vessels, shelves etc. Most of the perishable food items are prone to mold invasion and there is no way to save those once they are infected.

What are the effects of mould spores on us?

Mold spores tend to cause respiratory issues. It could also cause allergies. Molds should be stopped from spreading as prolonged exposure to fungal mold would cause serious respiratory problems. If mold-infested food is intaken, it would cause digestive problems.

A month ago, Chennai got to see the rains that it had not seen in the past few decades. The temperature was also unusually very less on those days. Most people had vacated Chennai for a few days until it came back to normal. I was no exception to that. I was out of Chennai during the rains and when I came back, our house was a complete mess. Due to power failure, all the food products in the refrigerator were decayed and stinking. Mold has grown everywhere in the house from kitchen shelves, walls, bed, clothes, vessels and what not.

I threw away the mold-infested food items and washed the clothes, but I could not remove the mold from my wooden spoons, vessel handles and other wood items, no matter what I tried. I was able to clean, but after cleaning, it just appeared back in a few hours (Because, the spores were not removed, I guess). When I googled on how to clean it, most of the results told to me throw away the wooden spoons. And, then I tried cleaning those with a few items available in my kitchen and luckily, it worked. So, I thought many people might find this post very useful. Over to Mold removal from wood – Mold Spores and Fungus removal – DIY from Home-Making-Delight with step by step photos..

There are two ways to remove the mold from your wooden vessels. Try the first one using tamarind and if it doesn’t work, go for the second method using vinegar.

Method 1 – using Tamarind paste:

This worked for a few of my wooden spoons and spatulas. But, for a few, it did not work and I am not sure why. Just try it out this one and if it doesn’t work, then go for the second one. Method-2 would be perfect. 🙂

What would you need:

  1. Tamarind/Tamarind paste
  2. Coconut oil
  3. Sponge or cotton balls

How to use:

  1. Wipe off the fungus using a cloth. DO NOT wash it in water at any cost.

  2. If you are using tamarind paste, apply it all over the wooden piece and let it sit for an hour or so. If you are using tamarind, soak it in water for sometime and once it is soft, apply it on your wooden piece.

Method 2 – Using Vinegar:

This method worked well for all my wooden items and wooden boards at home. Few of my furniture was also cleaned using this one and mold spores did not recur. I used apple cider vinegar and I guess any vinegar would do.

What would you need:

  1. Vinegar
  2. Coconut oil
  3. Cotton balls or sponge

How to use:

  1. Wipe off the fungus using a cloth. DO NOT wash it in water at any cost.
  2. Using cotton balls, apply vinegar on your wooden vessel.

How to prevent molds from growing on your wooden vessels:

  1. Never soak your wooden spoons or spatulas in water. Once used, clean them and pat them dry immediately.
  2. Applying oil frequently (just wipe with oil) on your wood would give more life to them as well as protect them from mold spores and fungus.
