Tomato Rasam – Thakkali Saaru is an Indian spicy soup prepared by cooking pureed tomatoes with ground Indian spice mixture & tempered with mustard seeds & curry leaves in ghee.
Rasam is a South Indian soup variety served commonly with rice during meals or as a warm soup or to soak vadas (Rasa Vadas). There are different ways to prepare rasam with different ingredients. Among them, this instant tomato rasam is the most common and the easiest to prepare. This is one of the bachelor recipes which you can prepare anytime you feel like having a simple home cooked meal.

Rasam is mainly included in Indian meals because of its health benefits. Whenever we were sick, our mom used to prepare this simple meal of rice porridge & rasam which was really easy to swallow & stomach-filling.
- Rasam eases the digestion process and also serves as an appetizer.
- The spice mixture in Rasam (Jeera, Turmeric powder & Pepper) helps in soothing cold & sore throat.
- Tomatoes are good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C & Folic Acid and also rich in dietary fiber.
Tomato is also called Takkali in Malayalam, Tametokai in Telugu, Tomaato Hannu in Kannada, Tameta in Hindi and Thakkali in Tamil.

Tomato Rasam Recipe – Thakkali Saaru Recipe
Serves 2 or 3
Tomato – 2
Jeera – 1 tsp
Pepper – 1 tsp
Coriander Seeds/Dhaniya – 1/2 tsp
Red chilly – 1
Water or Rice Water – 2 cups
Salt – 3/4 tsp or as required
Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
Cilantro – few
Ghee – 1 tblsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Jeera – 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves – few
- Boil or steam cook the tomatoes, remove skin (if you wish), mash it & keep it aside. If you don’t want to do this, please check the alternative method given on step 3.2. Dry roast the spices (Jeera, Red chilly, Coriander seeds, Pepper) until it starts turning brown, let it cool & grind them together to powder.3. Mix water, mashed tomatoes, rasam powder, turmerice powder & salt in a sauce pan and bring it to boil. Switch off the flame when it starts to boil.
If you have skipped step 1, you can heat 2 tbsp of oil in pan and add finely chopped tomatoes and saute until it turns mushy. Then, you can add water, rasam powder,turmeric powder and salt and bring it to boil.
4. Heat ghee in a pan. Once it’s hot enough add mustard seeds, Jeera & curry leaves and saute them until it splutters.5. Add this seasoning to your Thakkali Rasam, Garnish with cilantro and serve your healthy South Indian Soup – Thakkali Rasam – Tomato Rasam hot with rice or warm as soup.
- Do not boil rasam for long time. Switch it off when it starts to boil & become frothy on top.
- Prepare rasam with fresh ground spice mixture (rasam powder) as it gives more aroma and flavor to it.
- I highly recommend to use Rice water (water used to wash rice) to prepare rasam as they give additional vitamins & minerals boost. Some people also use Dhal water for it.
- If you are preparing this Rasam for a sick person, do add a couple of garlic pods while grinding the spices.
- We have given this Rasam recipe without tamarind or dhal. Normal Rasam would have tamarind juice added (with a tomato less) to the same procedure.
- If you are suffering from cold/throat infection, you can drink a cup of hot Rasam to feel relieved.
