Onion Tomato Chutney – Vengayam Thakkali Chutney
Onion Tomato Chutney is a smooth, creamy dip made by grinding the mixture of roasted dhal, onions & tomatoes together into a paste and then tempering it with mustard seeds and curry leaves. It is a never-boring accompaniment for Idlis, Dosas, Upma, Poha & Uthappam. Onion Tomato Chutney is one of the common varieties of chutney/accompaniments prepared in South India for Idlies and Dosas.
Onion Tomato Chutney can be prepared in many ways by using onions and tomatoes and tweaking the other spices and ingredients to our preference. We went for an unplanned ball game at our friend’s home and ended up staying for dinner. She served us hot Idlis with this Thakkali chutney. I was surprised to see her adding Channa dal to the chutney which I have never done before. But, it really brought out more flavor. I ate many idlies thanks to this Thakkali chutney, though I was not feeling hungry. 😀 Onion Tomato chutney is a basic & easy side dish to go well with your Idlis & dosas. Onion Tomato spicy dip| Vengaya thakkali Chutney | Pyaaj Tamatar Chutney | Ullipayalu Tamata Chutney | Eeruli Goore hannu Chutney | Ulli Takkali Chutney
Onion – 3/4 cup
Tomato – 1 cup
Red Chilly – 2 or 3
Chana dhal (kadalai paruppu) – 1 tblsp
Water – 1/4 cup (roughly)
Salt as required
Oil – 1 tblsp
Mustard seeds (kadugu) – 1/2 tsp
Urad dhal (Ulundhu) – 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves – few
- Add a tsp of oil in a pan and roast chana dal & red chilly, until they are golden brown. Keep it aside.2. In the same pan, saute the chopped onions until translucent. Then, add the chopped tomatoes & cook it until it turns mushy.3. Let it cool and grind the mixture with roasted dhal, salt & red chillies. Add water if required to make a smooth paste.4. Heat oil in a pan and temper with the ingredients under “To Temper” & add it to the Vengayam thakkali chutney.5. Your Onion Tomato Chutney tastes great with Idlis. You can also serve with Dosa, Uthappam, Upma & Paniyaram as side dish.
- You can also add chana dal instead of Urad dal for tempering.
- Add few cilantro/coriander leaves while grinding for more flavor.
- Red chillies would easily get burnt. So, first add the dhal and then the red chillies. At times, we roast them separately.
