Poha Recipe – Aval Upma – Quick breakfast with flattened rice

Hi Folks,

Poha Recipe – Aval Upma – Quick breakfast with flattened rice, peanuts and onions – Aval Upma called as Poha in North India is an easy, simple breakfast prepared by cooking soaked flattened rice with onions and peanuts.

Normally Tamil people would have Idly/Dosa/Upma for their breakfast. But, many people would run farther whenever they hear the word ‘Upma‘.  😀 There are loads of Upma varieties – Arisi Upma, Rava Upma, Wheat rava Upma, Semiya Upma, Ragi Semiya Upma etc. They would make a proper full-supplement delicious breakfast when accompanied with matching chutney/sambhar/kothsu. They are easy to prepare and would mostly be preferred by Bachelors/Bachelorettes for breakfast. Here is one simple but delicious recipe for Aval Upma commonly referred to as POHA.

Growing up, I was never a big fan of upma varieties and never touched them. My mom would prepare dosa for me whenever she prepared upma at my home. Luckily, they never served upma in my college hostel too (Not so lucky, I could have killed a few people with my hostel IDLIES in a single hit 😐). Once I was at home for my study hols and I was reading ( ??!??!!? ) something. As I was reading, I saw my Thatha (Grandfather) rushing in and out of the dining hall very frequently munching something. He normally used to eat very less irrespective of whether he liked or not. Out of curiosity, I opened and saw what it was there in the hot pack and to my surprise, I saw steaming ‘Aval Upma’ in there. I had already had dosa then, so I rushed to tell my mom that Thatha seemed to have like it so much. My mom was so glad hearing that and then she asked me to try that. Saying that, she put a spoonful of that AVAL Upma into my mouth and that moment I realized that UPMAs are all not that bad like I had been assuming ( After started my own cooking while I was staying with my friends, UPMAs are the ones that kept me alive, that is a different story 😛). Good thing is her poha recipe is quite simple too. She prepares so many flavors of POHA (Sweet, Tamarind, Lime, Dhal flavored) all of which would be so delicious. I would post them soon for you guys. Over to my mom’s delicious poha recipe – Onion Aval Upma – Kanda Poha from Home-Making-Delight with step by step photos.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cooking Time :  5 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients:

  1. Aval ( Flattened Rice) : 2 cups

2) Ginger – a small piece (Grated)

3) Green Chillies -4

4) Curry leaves – a few (as per your taste)

5) Peanuts – 2 tbsp

6) Cashew nuts – 5 (Optional)

7) Salt – As needed

8) Tamarind – a small pinch (Optional)

9) Water – half a cup

10) Mustard (Kadugu) – 1 tsp

11) Asafoetida (Hing/ Perungayam) – A small pinch

12) Urad dhal (Ulundhu): 1 tsp

13) Oil – 4 tbsp

14) Channa dhal (Kadalai parupu) – 2 tsp

15) Onions – 3 – 4 (Big/Medium)

16) Finely chopped potatoes, peas, carrots – 1/2 cup [Optional]

To Garnish:

Chopped coriander leaves – a few tbsp

Preparation Method:

1) Soak the tamarind in water. I have used the tamarind paste which would not take much time to get dissolved. If you are using tamarind, let it get soaked in hot water for 15 minutes and then throw away the tamarind residue. Add salt and turmeric powder to this tamarind water.

2) Wash and rinse the Aval (Flattened rice) to wash away the impurities, if any. Skip, if your beaten rice is good.

3) Soak the aval in the tamarind mixture prepared in step one for 5 minutes.

4)  Heat oil in a kadai and add mustard seeds. When it pops, add urad dhal, channa dhal, ginger, chillies and curry leaves. You can add peanuts now. Or, check bottom notes for more instructions. Add chopped veggies, if adding.

5) Take care not to burn the dhal added. Then, add onions and saute until they turn translucent.DSC00089

6) Then, squeeze the extra water from the soaked rice flakes completely and add to the sauteed onions.

7) Just, saute in medium flame for a minute and then switch the stove off.

8) Garnish with Cilantro leaves and serve hot with a chutney of your choice 🙂 I don’t need a chutney for poha. 🙂 But, you can pair with coconut chutney, if you want.

Notes:

  1. You can skip the tamarind part from this poha recipe.
  2. Add cashews and peanuts roasted in ghee to give it a rich taste.
  3. Two types of AVAL are available in the market – Thin and thick ones. I used the thin variety which doesn’t need much soaking time. Just a minute or two would be fine. If you are using the thick ones, you can soak it for 5 minutes. Don’t over-soak the aval in water as this might make the dish watery. Squeeze out the water completely after soaking.
  4. Don’t reduce the number of onions in this poha recipe. Whenever we prepare any dish which are known to be bland, adding more onions would do the trick. 🙂
